As part of an idea for another illustration that I’m finishing up, I took a photo of a chocolate covered sprinkled donut in order to illustrate a realistic distribution of sprinkles. In Adobe Illustrator, I separated each of the seven colors including white into individual layers, which allowed me to recolor many sprinkles at a time by selecting the entire layer. Several hours were spent in a zen-like state redrawing each sprinkle individually with the pen tool. The endless chocolate background allows the viewer to use their innate gestalt to complete the shape of the donut. It needs a Duncan Donuts logo in the lower right corner to complete this as a beautifully minimalist spec campaign - Donut silhouettes. Complete the picture with yourself in it. - the viewer not only finishes the donut in their mind, but the whole donut story itself, from idea to purchase. In the age of carb-load-gluten-free-hay snacks, the message is simple - treat yourself to a fuckin’ donut every now and then, you deserve it. Don’t overwhelm the viewer with bold graphics and cheap messaging, just show them a donut, dammit! That’s what we sell, you’re in and out, you know it’s cheap - get over yourself and make some friends at work by covering the donut expenses one morning. That’s what’s up.
