Brain Train

By Chevon Hicks

I started doing some “brain exercises” on a site call Lumosity and not only is the training already working (I feel sharper, my memory is improving and I’m faster-thinking), it’s also fun, and they have compelling research to back it up.  The neuroscientists that developed this system found that the brain needs exercise, and they’ve pinpointed specific 15 minute a day workouts to help increase memory, attention and processing speed. In cahoots with the Human Cognition Project, scientists from genius bars like Harvard, Stanford & Berkeley are working on simultaneous research with the data from Lumosity results and volunteers from Lumosity who are interested in digging deeper in cognitive brain function. In a sci-fi book I’m reading, Super Sad True Love Story, the protagonist works at a company that sells life extensions, but in order to purchase, one needs to qualify with the right genes, IQ and body tone.  I’m hoping that my brain games in combination with my Nike Fuel Band will keep me fit from head to toe.

KICKING GRASS

By Chevon Hicks

“When Saturday Comes” is the tagline of Atlético Silverlake, my soccer league (empire). I run a Saturday co-ed pick up game, a trophy-winning elite men’s team, an AYSO U10 team my son plays for, Atlético Juniors (pronounced, “yoon-yours”) and Tuesday night on-line FIFA 13 Atlético Videogame team.  New to the catalogue is a kids soccer skills workshop I developed with my good buddy, MLS Pro, Jack Stewart. Yeah… I like soccer, I like it a lot.  Check out the posters I make to promote my teams with  the real-life characters that play with us. T-shirts and other merch is in the works. If you play, want to play, or have a kid who plays, check out http://www.atleti.co

Marvel-lous Gift

By Chevon Hicks

It ‘s unauthorized, uncensored and unforgiving. MARVEL COMICS: THE UNTOLD STORY is out and critics agree, it’s a good read, filled with scintillating stories never told about the Superheros of your youth, and the road to the Disney-owned notoriety Marvel enjoys today.

Written by Sean Howe, an editor at Entertainment Weekly, this account of everyone’s favorite underdog, the rivalry with D.C. Comics, and the rocky road to notoriety.  The relevance is undeniable… this “underdog” is enjoying success with the Avengers & Iron Man at the box office,  creating forward-thinking plot lines, like Northstar & his boyfriend same-sex wedding in the August edition of  ”The Astonishing X-Men” , and  “Marvel Heros”, the beta version of  the new free on-line game.

This is a 50 year account of the fanboys and the geeks that it took to build the modern incarnation of Marvel. (image STAN LEE, CENTERFOLD  by Eliot R. Brown)

An ADVENTURE TIME Holiday!

By Heavenspot

The Emmy-nominated Cartoon Network series, Adventure Time announced recently a new video game and a newly released box-set for the holidays this year!

We, at Heavenspot dig the show and the comic books, so we are looking forward to the video game.

If you don’t know Adventure Time, the creator Pendleton Ward is a CalArts alum, and it is a “childrens” cartoon set in a post-apocalyptic, magical world where Finn, (a boy) and his best friend/dog/possible brother have trippy adventures based on moral and social dilemmas with their fr-enemies. Finn is spunky and teenager-y, while Jake, the shapeshifting dog is the voice of reason. The characters are bizarre and hilarious and well-developed and sophisticated, yet whimsical and just plain weird.

The vivid style is flat and shiny like the Candy Kingdom Princess Bubblegum reigns in, she rides a rainbow unicorn that leaves a trail of rainbow… but she’s not just rainbows and candy… she’s an accomplished scientist who is multi-lingual and can kick ass if necessary. And the environment has some crazy darkness too… after the nuclear “Great Mushroom Wars” humans, other than Finn are completely absent. The dark Marceline, a quirky but fun vampire queen plays guitar and croons of her Daddy eating the fries that she bought and equates that to his love.

The best things about Adventure Time are that it’s beautiful to see and it’s completely bizarre, spiritual and completely hilarious to decide if it’s a whimsical kids cartoon or social commentary.

I still think Lennon was the coolest

At Heavenspot, we’re all pretty much made up of equal parts creative, design, development and strategy. But one trait that affects 100% of the office is our pervasive addiction to video games. Here’s an amazing outro movie for the new Beatles Rock Band game distributed by our friends at EA. Enjoy!

Not only is video artist MichaelHickox taking us decades back with 8-bit gaming, he’s using stop-motion Legos to do it.

Calling all Gamers: Come Out and Plaaaaay!

By Tim Jaramillo

It’s that time of year again … the sun’s out, and all you can think about are all the new games to be unveiled at the upcoming Electronic Entertainment Expo.

Running from June 2-4, this year’s E3 event is open to the general gaming industry public once again, after 2 years in which organizers instituted a shady invite-only format. Because of the new open policy, this year’s event should be a more festive atmosphere (hello … cosplay wackos and booth babes!) than the last 2 year’s somewhat ho-hum vibe.

Of special note, there’s a buzz surrounding Activision as they will be back to showcase their latest wares, after boycotting E3 last year. The word is that Activision will be releasing details on the 10th installment of the Tony Hawk skate game. So get those digits ready to shred some ripping style, holmes!
